If you have an iPhone and listen to music with your headphones on, you’ve probably received a security notification from your headphones.
iPhone’s headphone safety feature notifies listeners and automatically reduces volume if audio exposure has been too high for too long. this feature is designed to prevent prolonged exposure to loud sounds from damaging your hearing.

Although you can turn the level up again, the headphone security feature can be inconvenient and annoying, especially when listening to music through external bluetooth speakers instead of headphones.
If your headset’s security has been automatically lowering sound levels, you can turn it off. that’s how it’s done.
how to disable headphone security
We do not recommend disabling headphone security on your iphone if you frequently listen to loud music while using headphones. what is headphone security? Over time, listening to loud music for a long period of time can damage your hearing. Instead of turning off headphone notifications, turn up the decibel level with the loud noise reduction feature. This feature allows you to specify a decibel level for your headphones, which is set to 85 decibels by default.
If you use external bluetooth speakers, apple recommends that you change the device type to “speaker”. both options will allow you to listen to music at higher audio levels without disabling the headset’s security feature.
If you still prefer to disable headphone security, there are two ways to disable volume warning on iphone. follow these steps:
- open settings.
- touch sounds & haptics.
- then tap headset security.

what is headset security?
Listening to sound with headphones at too high a volume for too long can damage your hearing. headphone safety is a headphone notification feature on iphone that helps you protect your hearing. If you have reached the recommended 7-day audio exposure limit, you will receive a notification asking you to lower the volume.
After receiving the notification, your volume will automatically be reduced the next time you plug in your headphones or connect via bluetooth. the exposure limit applies to audio only. phone calls do not count toward headset audio exposure. If your iPhone is muting incoming calls, there is a solution for the problem below.

how to prevent iphone from muting calls
many people have a problem where their iphone silences incoming calls and sends them directly to voicemail. If you’re sure Do Not Disturb isn’t enabled, there are a few workarounds you can try.
First, make sure you don’t have call forwarding turned on and that mute unknown calls is also turned off. you can find both here:
- go to settings.
- tap phone.
- scroll down and turn off call phone forwarding.
- scroll down and disable mute unknown calls.
When mute unknown calls is enabled, any calls from an unknown number, such as telemarketers and scammers, will be forwarded to voicemail. if you think you can receive legitimate calls from unknown numbers, it’s probably worth keeping this option off.
if that doesn’t solve your problem, the other setting to check is screen time.
- in settings
- tap screen time
- then tap communication limits and enter the passcode if prompted.
- during screen time and during idle time should be set to all.
If you have screen time enabled, it is possible to block some phone calls during screen time and during idle time. to make sure you don’t miss a call, you want to set both for everyone.
If you’re still having problems, then of course the most obvious place to check is do not disturb. want this setting to be turned off. it’s also worth making sure the volume isn’t reduced to zero.
