I suggested less than 60 ohms because, for headphones, anything less than about 50 or 60 ohms is “normal”… ie “low impedance”.

Driving headphones of 60 ohms or less not only for the Helix, but for any device, is extremely sound advice. you’ll be lucky enough to be able to drive higher impedance headphones with anything other than an old fashioned solid-state stereo speaker amp that uses the same output amp to drive the headphones (with resistors in place to reduce the output), or a dedicated, specialized and quite expensive amplifier. headphone amp that is designed to deliver much higher output levels than is standard for, well, standard headphones (which, as noted, are less than about 60 ohms).

there are some unique headphones in the world. most manufacturers, like akg, do not alter the tone of the headphones between different impedances. they sound the same, within the same model… or if there are differences, they are very, very subtle.

beyer has one that is 600 ohms, and it sounds different from the lower impedance versions because it uses a lot more windings but with thinner wire. but most high-impedance versions don’t sound any different simply because they’re high-impedance. impedance is an electrical factor that is intentionally adhered to in the design, as is the tonal characteristic. with tons of windings on a very small wire diameter, they could have achieved a lower impedance. they chose that design because they can…because some (higher quality) dedicated home stereo amplifiers can drive 600 ohm phones just fine. however, it’s not very practical, and almost all gear doesn’t drive 600-ohm phones particularly high without the amp clipping very audibly.

is the output impedance of the propeller 11 ohms? that’s pretty normal the headphone amp’s output impedance is usually several times lower than the standard headphone impedance it’s designed for, but it’s not indicative of the headphone impedance it must drive to work well. an 11 ohm output impedance doesn’t mean you should try to find 11 ohm headphones (which I suspect don’t exist). it means it works like any normal headphone amp and will work with standard low impedance headphones, and it doesn’t hurt to try high impedance phones, but I wouldn’t expect great performance. my helix lt can’t drive my akg 600 ohm phones very well, just for example. they sound good, but very quiet and kind of heavy as those phones always sound.

The stereos I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s just used the resistors in series with the headphone speaker output method, usually, and sounded good with anything, low or high impedance. then I got better stereos with dedicated headphone amps and suddenly high-impedance phones didn’t sound as good. ironic, right?

note: the site you mentioned, and most others, only seem to talk about beyer headphones having a different tone for the high impedance model. they use them as kind of an example, because model phones exist in different impedances and sound different. they sound different because the 600 ohm version is the high end. the akg 240’s come in different impedances, but they’re not referenced, even though they were a standard long before beyer (and i’m not saying they’re that good – generally i’d prefer beyerdynamic phones to most others, if the price was not a problem) ). this difference in tone between the impedances does not apply to akg or other major headphone manufacturers. there are differences in tone between other changes in the 240 series (there are dramatic changes in how they’re done between the “sextet”, monitor, studio, df, etc.). but 240m and 240m sound pretty much the same, even though the s is 55 ohms and the m is 600 ohms. the beyer 770 example is a unique thing without any standard, and it’s only that way because of how beyer designed them. there is no standard correlation between impedance and pitch.

People complain about the headphones on the propeller because you can hear the gurgling distortion with the headphones. this is quite normal. if you play through a set of hi-fi speakers or certain studio monitors, you’ll also hear a hiss if you’re close to the tweeter. same reason. revealing/precise high-frequency driver close to your ears, or aimed directly at your ears at a minimum (on axis, not at an angle, as high frequencies are super directional).

matching is needed for helix to sound great with phones or telltale speakers.

Anyway, I hope my information is useful in some way. at least it’s another opinion from another experienced person who has dealt extensively with recording engineering and loudspeaker design/building for several decades…and unlike some of the websites referenced, I’m actually explaining facts about headphones other than a specific, and unique, example (beyer 770, for example).
